First stage Campus Asia program (2011-2015)

Kyushu University succeeded in adoption of the "Re-Inventing Japan Project" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), with a five years graduate school program entitled "Cooperational Graduate Education Program for the Development of Global Human Resources in Energy and Environmental Science and Technology"(FY2011-2015). Three consortium universities, Kyushu University (Japan), Shanghai Jiao-Tong University (China), and Pusan National University (South Korea) established an international cooperative education program aiming at double degree (DD) in master courses at two universities among the three consortium universities. A central objective of this program is to grow qualified researchers and engineers who can be active leaders in the field of science and technology of energy issue and related environmental issue ("Energy and Environmental Science and Technology (EEST)")

Within five years of the first stage Campus Asia EEST program, nearly 50 students graduated master courses with DD and more than 600 students studied EEST in student exchange program like summer school and seminars.
The program was highly evaluated by Japanese Society of Engineering Education (JSEE) and awarded Engineering Education Award (MEXT Minister’s Award in Engineering and Education).

Second stage Campus Asia program (2016-2021)

Government supported CAMPUS Asia (CA) project was terminated in fiscal year 2015. Based on its successful outcomes, three governments (Japan, China and South Korea) have decided to start the 2nd stage of CA project. CAMPUS Asia EEST program organized by KU, SJTU and PNU is approved to proceed another 5 years as Collaborative Graduate School Program for Global Human Resources Development in Energy and Environmental Science and Technology – A New Challenge under the government support.

One of the main purposes of the 2nd stage CA EEST project is to regularize the DD program and to extend the program to involve more students with openness, progressiveness and universality in science and engineering fields. To realize the regularization of the DD program seems quite hard and is really a new challenge. Nevertheless, the three universities will try to realize it within 5 years. Furthermore, development of a DD program in doctoral course is also another new challenge. Operation of Summer School as an open program is also targeted.

Energy security and environment conservation are eternal themes for human beings. Every country in the world must share recognition of the importance of global energy and environmental issues and work together under equal partnership to promote education, research and technology development. Graduate schools have the responsibility to bring up qualified researchers and engineers who can lead the world in this field. Especially in Asia, the rapid economic growth and energy consumption are exacerbating the issue of environmental pollution. Then, it is extremely important that universities in Japan, China, and South Korea work closely together to develop collaborative education programs to send out their excellent graduate students as global leaders in the field of EEST, and to cultivate young leaders in Asia and send them from Asia to the World.

Background and objective of this program

Asia is the scene of ongoing energy and environmental issues

Rapid economic growth
Rapid increase in energy consumption
Aggravating environmental pollution

Restructuring initiatives and policies against energy and environmental issues

To advance scientific and technological research for cultivating human resources in Asia who will participate worldwide.

Compact triangular alliance of graduate schools in Japan, China and South Korea.

Development, implementation, and deployment of practical collaborative educational programs in EEST where Asia should take initiative to lead the world.
