[ABSTRACT ]

In this study, the formation of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and carrageenan (κ) based graft copolymer formed by free radical polymerization with the help of heterogeneous catalyst (Propiophenonebutyldimethylammonium iodide) was investigated for its antibacterial activity against E-Coli and Staphylococcus aureus for potential use as coating on biomaterial surface. The polymerization kinetics with respect to the steady state approximation, effect of monomer and catalyst concentrations on the rate of polymerization is studied. The synthesized copolymer exhibited growth inhibition zone of 18 and 11 mm compared to streptomycin standard of 25 mm which successfully hindering the progression of the S. aureus.
