The 27th CSS-EEST Held at SJTU LCC Campus

This year's CSS-EEST was hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's LCC (China-UK Low Carbon College) and took place at the LCC campus from December 9th to 13th. The campus is located near the vast artificial Dishui Lake in the Pudong New Area, a new town surrounded by nature and also home to a large shopping mall, giving it a different charm from the SJTU main campus in the city center or the one in the Minhang district.

More than 70 students attended CSS27, including from Pusan National University and the University Technology Malaysia, and 11 master's and doctoral students from Kyushu University participated, giving oral and poster presentations.

Here is one of the KU student’s impressions of the CSS-EEST27, he is a second-year master's student, who was attending such an international conference for the first time.

"First of all, from an academic perspective, I think the best thing about this program was that by listening to presentations by students from other universities, I was able to discover new approaches to my own research topic. It also gave me the opportunity to learn about environmental issues and the latest research, about which I had little knowledge, which really stimulated my intellectual curiosity. Furthermore, seeing the presentation style, depth of the research, and progress made me reconsider my own approach to research.
Next, regarding international exchange. This may be a sentiment you’ve heard many times before, but through interacting with students and faculty members for the first time, I was able to deepen my understanding of the culture, customs, and national politics of each country. Also, by speaking directly with local people, I was able to bridge the gap between the image of foreigners I had gained from watching TV and the internet, and I think I was able to dispel my own prejudices and assumptions.
I believe that being able to make presentations and interact with people who speak different languages will definitely be useful when I become involved in solving problems in the international community in the future. I also feel that it is especially important that many students have this kind of experience, especially now when the international situation is unstable. I believe that even if your language skills are insufficient, it is important to be proactive and try to communicate. "
