Laboratory Rotation

All GA course students must participate in the “Laboratory rotation” which is a research activity in a different laboratory as well as their main laboratory. The laboratory where students may conduct a research activity should be decided through discussion with their KU research supervisor and the relevant host professors.

The period of the research in each laboratory should be at least 3 months. If necessary, it is possible to extend the period. In that case, write the reasons on the registration form.

FIFTH BATCH STUDENTS may choose between the existing system (3 Labs) and the new system (2 Labs) as a transition period, but the new system is recommended. 6th batch students have no choice but the new one (2 labs).

The module is allocated 6 credits from “Fundamental Research I/II/III” which is a requirement for QE and GA course completion.

Flow of the “Laboratory Rotation”

  • The GA student should consult with their KU research supervisor as well as the relevant host professor to decide the laboratories where they will undertake research. Their KU research supervisor will give appropriate advice considering the various factors of the particular student, such as their interests and necessary knowledge relevant to their main research area. Students can browse a laboratory rotation history of senior students in the GA office for reference.
  • At least one month before starting a laboratory rotation, the student should complete a registration form with the host laboratory, supervisor, period and research topics and reason for selecting it, and submit the form to the GA office by email. (greenasia[at]ga.kyushu-u.ac.jp)
Upon approval of the GA academic affairs committee, the student can commence the laboratory rotation according to the plan.
  • Within one month of completing research in both laboratories, the student must submit 1 combined laboratory rotation report detailing the achievements of the research activity. The report should include adequate contents equivalent to and compatible with a standard master thesis.

The style of the report should be similar to that used in an academic paper consisting of at least 5,000 words. Please read the guidance notes in the “laboratory rotation template carefully.
Be sure to submit the report in both paper and electronic format before the deadline (announced by GA before QE). Please email the electronic version and hand in the original paper version signed by the research supervisors to the GA office.
  • In the Qualifying Examination (QE), the GA student is required to deliver a presentation detailing the key aspects of the research of the two laboratories (20 minutes for presentation and 9 minutes for discussion in total) as well as to submit an abstract (“abstract form ) consisting of 2 pages of A4 sheets.

A 5th batch student who selected 3 labs instead of 2 is required to make a presentation detailing research from all 3 labs (20-min presentation & 9-min discussion in total) and submit an abstract consisting of 3 pages of A4 sheets.

If you have any questions regarding the laboratory rotation, please contact the GA office.
